Addressing the Invisible Scars of Displacement
For refugee single mothers, displacement is not only a physical relocation. It is also an emotional and psychological struggle. Many mothers in Nakivale carry significant psychological burdens, including trauma from conflict, the loss of family members, and the stress of raising children alone in a new country. Without mental health support, learning new vocational skills or managing a business can be very difficult. Mental health is a vital foundation for economic progress.
At Uplift Her Hub, we believe that emotional healing is essential for long-term development. Our peer-led counselling circles provide a safe, supportive space where mothers can share their experiences, process trauma, and rebuild their confidence and self-worth.
The Peer Support Model in Action
Our psychosocial support program is designed around safety, trust, and community leadership:
- Refugee-Led Facilitation: Our circles are facilitated by trained peer leaders who are refugees themselves. This shared background builds immediate trust and understanding.
- Weekly Healing Circles: Regular group sessions focus on active listening, validation, and emotional resilience, helping mothers build supportive networks.
- Vocational Transition: Once mothers achieve emotional stability, they can transition into our livelihood training programs (such as chalk, candle, or book production) when they feel ready.
By integrating mental health care with economic opportunities, we address both the emotional and material needs of the mothers we serve. This comprehensive support helps build lasting resilience.
Sponsoring Trauma Healing and Safe Spaces
Mental health initiatives are often underfunded in humanitarian settings. You can help us sustain these safe spaces for refugee mothers in Nakivale:
- Fund Counselling Sessions ($75): Sponsors weekly healing circles for a group of 10-15 mothers, providing immediate emotional support and community.
- Sponsor Facilitator Training ($200): Funds training workshops for new peer facilitators, equipping them with trauma-informed leadership skills.
- Academic Research Collaborations: We welcome partnerships with research institutions to study and document our peer-led mental health model.
