Large-scale, long-term refugee settlements often face significant environmental challenges. Rapid population growth can lead to deforestation for fuel, depletion of water tables, and high waste accumulation. In Nakivale, host and refugee communities live closely together, sharing limited natural resources. At Uplift Her Hub, we believe that economic opportunities should not come at the cost of environmental health. True self-reliance must be built on sustainable development, preserving the local environment for future generations.

Our programs are designed to minimize environmental impact and promote eco-friendly practices. By introducing sustainable manufacturing methods, we teach young refugee mothers how to earn an income while actively protecting their local ecosystem.

Eco-Friendly Livelihoods in Action

We intentionally structure our production groups around environmentally conscious practices and green production lines:

• Non-Toxic Chalk Production: Our chalk is handcrafted using locally sourced gypsum and organic, non-toxic binders. This process avoids chemical additives, making the product safe for children and teachers, and reducing chemical runoff in the soil.
• Natural Beeswax Candle Making: Traditional candles often use petroleum-based paraffin, which releases soot when burned. We use natural, biodegradable beeswax sourced from local beekeepers. This supports local agriculture, encourages apiculture (beekeeping), and provides a clean-burning product.
• Upcycled Tailoring & Textiles: Our tailoring group utilizes fabric offcuts and scrap materials to create household items like shopping bags and reusable sanitary pads, reducing textile waste in local landfills.

Action Plan for Environmental Partners and Impact Investors

We are seeking collaborations with environmental organizations, green foundations, and impact investors to strengthen our sustainability initiatives:

1. Solar Power Integration: We aim to transition our workspaces to clean energy. Sponsoring solar power kits ($800) helps run sewing machines and lighting, reducing carbon emissions.
2. Apiculture and Agroforestry: We want to partner with forestry conservation groups to train host and refugee farmers in sustainable beekeeping. This creates a supply of beeswax for our candle makers while protecting local trees.
3. Clean Cooking and Waste Management: We seek grants to introduce clean cookstoves and recycling workshops to our production groups, reducing deforestation and helping manage plastic waste in the settlement.
