For the residents of the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in southwestern Uganda, global humanitarian funding shortages are not abstract policy concepts. They are a daily struggle for survival. Recent budget deficits have forced major humanitarian agencies to cut monthly cash transfers and food rations significantly. For a young single mother in the settlement, a cash transfer reduction means deciding between buying food for her toddlers or purchasing basic medicine. With rations cut to a fraction of the recommended daily intake, food insecurity has become a major challenge.

When humanitarian budgets decline, the burden of survival falls heavily on single mothers. These young women must balance childcare with the search for fuel, water, and income. Without a stable source of income, they face difficult economic choices. At Uplift Her Hub, we believe that when institutional aid declines, local empowerment must expand to fill the gap.

Empowerment as the Ultimate Safety Net

Rather than relying on shrinking international aid distributions, young mothers in our programs learn to produce everyday household items, manage village savings groups, and establish small businesses. This training provides a reliable economic safety net, allowing them to support their families independently.

Our livelihood groups manufacture products with strong local demand, such as school chalk, natural soap, and beeswax candles. Because these goods are sold directly within the settlement, the economic value remains inside the community. This circular economy builds resilience, helping refugee families manage external financial shocks.
